Live captions for hearing support on Windows: what to try first

Start with a free Windows 11 option

You do not need translation just to read speech from a call, video, or class on your PC. First try Windows 11 Live Captions with Windows + Ctrl + L. Microsoft says it captions audio from other apps on the device and lets you change the caption position and style. You can also include microphone input if you enable that option. Built-in translation depends on a compatible Copilot+ PC and supported languages.

This quick check clarifies what matters before installing another tool: is the right voice captured, can you read the text without covering your work, and do you need translation? No automatic system perfectly handles overlapping speakers, noise, or distant audio.

When Aurora may fit

Aurora Subtitles offers a Windows overlay with configurable position, dimensions, font, colors, outline, background, fade, and line count. It can listen to system audio or a microphone through its documented routes. It also supports captions without translation: in the CPU presets, matching English or Spanish source and target languages displays same-language captions without loading a translator. This can help someone follow conversations with friends or family on a PC even when everyone speaks the same language. Windows itself also offers an overlay and, on suitable hardware, translation: compare your PC’s options with Aurora’s actual language and hardware requirements.

  1. Identify whether the speech you need to read comes from system audio (other people in a call, video, or game) or your microphone. Select that input in Aurora; to inspect both, read the Both-mode limits first.
  2. If you only need to read the conversation, select the same source and target language: the CPU presets support this route for English and Spanish. For translation, check the pair in your chosen preset. Maximum Compatibility translates from English on CPU to its published targets; Maximum Quality offers a separate set with optional GPU and CPU fallback. The translation pairs are not interchangeable.
  3. Place the overlay so it does not cover faces, controls, or slides. Read a short sample at your normal screen size and viewing distance before relying on it for a long conversation.
  4. If text is missing or wrong, check the output device, selected input, and language first. When several people speak at once or the audio is noisy, ask for important information in writing.

Aurora can be used with Discord, meetings, classes, videos, or games. Individual usefulness depends on the setup and person; these are use cases, not user testimonials.

Know the limits

Automatic recognition may miss names, numbers, or instructions and can lag under load. For a medical appointment, legal matter, or another critical decision, verify important details with the other person and use the professional accessibility services available to you. Aurora is not a medical device or a substitute for human interpreters or legally required accommodations. Activation, license checks, updates, and initial model downloads may need an internet connection even though the core processing is local after setup.
