Aurora Maximum Compatibility: CPU-Only Live Captions on Windows

You do not need to begin with an NVIDIA GPU to evaluate Aurora Subtitles. The current product has a Maximum Compatibility preset designed for CPU-only processing across its supported source and target languages. It is a useful starting point for office PCs, older laptops, and Windows machines where a dedicated graphics card is unavailable or not worth configuring.
What Maximum Compatibility actually means
Maximum Compatibility is not a promise of identical performance on every PC. It is a defined operating path: supported source audio is processed on the CPU and translated into supported target languages. The local transcriber, voice-activity detection, translator, and overlay still form one desktop workflow, while Maximum Quality adds GPU acceleration when available and automatic CPU fallback.
The current CPU route accepts English audio and translates it into 51 published target languages. Check the live product language list for the exact destinations, because this catalog is independent from Maximum Quality.
The distinction matters because older Aurora articles may lead with NVIDIA hardware. The current product documentation says that GPU hardware is optional: Maximum Quality can use a compatible GPU and automatically fall back to CPU, while Maximum Compatibility runs on CPU with English input and 51 translation targets. Aurora still requires Windows 11 64-bit, and real-time latency depends on the language, audio quality, model choice, and system load.
A practical first setup
- Confirm that the PC runs Windows 11 64-bit and that you have enough free disk space for the app, selected models, cache, and updates. Aurora does not publish a rigid RAM minimum because the actual footprint depends on the selected language route.
- Install the current version from the Aurora download page if you already have a valid license. The 0.1.47 release notes include a fix for a GPU dependency problem on systems without an available GPU.
- Select Maximum Compatibility, use English as the source, and choose one of its 51 published translation targets.
- Start with one known audio source. Aurora can capture microphone input or Windows system audio through WASAPI, so a short video, meeting, or voice chat is easier to diagnose than a long mixed session.
- Adjust readability and responsiveness one setting at a time. The overlay supports configurable placement, font, color, outline, background, dimensions, line count, and fade behavior. A readable three-line layout is usually a better first test than a very compact overlay.

When to move to Maximum Quality
Use Maximum Quality when you need its GPU acceleration or a route outside the CPU configuration available in your current build. A compatible GPU may improve the experience, but the documented fallback means the app can return to CPU processing. The right decision is therefore driven by the language pair and workload, not by owning a particular GPU brand.
Maximum Compatibility is a good fit when you want local processing, predictable hardware expectations, and no monthly subscription or per-minute cloud credits. It is not a guarantee of perfect accuracy or fixed latency; noisy audio, accents, overlapping speakers, and heavy system load can change the result. Review important captions before relying on them.
