Did you mean to save the video's audio or your voice too? Decide before recording with Aurora

If you want to keep a video’s audio, first decide whether you also need your voice. Aurora’s optional OGG recording captures the selected source; Both includes system audio and microphone audio. Do not choose it just because it sounds more complete. Write down what you want to keep, then choose the corresponding source.
This guide proposes a preparation check, rather than reporting a test or a real meeting. If other people take part, agree with them what will be recorded before starting; this article does not determine the permissions required in every situation.
Visible captions do not decide which audio you keep
The official Aurora facts distinguish transcription, session activity and optional local recording. Seeing text while you listen does not mean recording has been enabled. For recording, ON starts capture and OFF finalizes it.
Before selecting ON, finish this sentence: “I want to keep ___ so I can ___.” “The video’s audio so I can listen to this passage again” may be enough. That purpose does not itself require adding your microphone.
Work through these three cases first
| What you want to keep | Source to check | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| The audio of a video playing on your PC | System audio | That a microphone is needed to keep the video audio |
| An explanation you speak into a microphone | Microphone | That the video sound is also included |
| The video’s audio and your spoken explanation | Both | That you will get two independently editable tracks |
These are suggested uses, not preset names or editing instructions. Documentation confirms that Both records both sources; it does not establish later voice separation, recovery of uncaptured audio or multitrack editing here.
Give a short rehearsal a specific question
Imagine preparing your own explanation of a video you have permission to use. You want video audio and your voice. Choose Both, enable recording, play a short passage and speak a test sentence; then finalize with OFF. Check the resulting file before a long session and see whether it contains what you need. If you only wanted the video, reconsider the source before the final recording.
This is a rehearsal you can perform, not a measured result from us. It does not assume separated audio, suitable levels or that one test on your PC guarantees another session.
Finalize and locate the file before calling it saved
The documented Audio > Sessions section lists recordings, opens their folder and offers Save As while retaining the original. After using OFF, locate the recording and decide whether you need a copy elsewhere. Saving another copy and deleting the original are different decisions; this procedure does not ask you to delete it.
If an expected file is missing, do not label it “recording checked.” Review whether you enabled and finalized capture, then contact support with those details, without unnecessary private conversations attached. Visible captions do not prove that an OGG exists.
Each recorder has its own controls
Microsoft Sound Recorder explains when it pauses and saves recordings. The Audacity manual connects recording to the input chosen in Audio setup. Their controls and formats do not describe Aurora’s: check source, start, finalization and destination separately. Sources consulted on 23 October 2026; this is not a quality comparison.
Check Aurora’s current download and requirements before installing. It is a paid product for compatible Windows PCs; the installer requires a valid license. Activation, validation and model setup may require internet. Codex assistance is a separate optional feature with its own account, connection and usage requirements; this guide does not require it.
